Remembering the war dead
People in Japan are commemorating the end of World War Two. Thousands gathered at the Nippon Budokan hall in Tokyo to honor the fallen in an annual ceremony held every August 15th.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko took part for the last time. The Emperor will abdicate next April.

今回気になったのは、abdicate /ˈæbdɪkèɪt/ です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“to give up the position of being king or queen” とあり、『ジーニアス英和大辞典』には、「(王位・権利・義務など)を捨てる、放棄する」と載っていました。また、ODEで語源を調べてみると、“mid 16th cent. : from Latin abdicat- ‘renounced’, from the verb abdicare, from ab- ‘away, from’ + dicare ‘declare’ .” と定義されています。過去のブログにも取り上げられていました。（Otoyo）
