dune /d(j)úːn｜djúːn/を取り上げます。sandと一緒に使われていることと、記事の内容から海岸の砂浜のことを表現しているのではないかと考えました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「砂丘、(嵐で盛り上がった)砂山(sand dune)」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“a hill made of sand near the sea or in the desert”と定義されています。ちなみに、語源を調べたところ、オランダ語のdūnaからきている表現だとgoo辞書では説明されていました。さらに、同語源の単語としてdown「丘陵地隊」があります。downにこのような意味があるのは知らなかったので、合わせて覚えておきたいと思います。
ちなみに大島は先生が学部時代に１ヶ月滞在され、日系ハワイ人のreturneesの調査研究をされた島だということです。(Blue Sky)
