flimsy 復習

少し前の記事ですが、面白い内容なので取り上げたいと思います。

Wedding dresses made from toilet paper

Every year, professional and amateur designers create wedding-ready bridal gowns in New York as part of the annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest.

Contestants are only allowed to use only needle, thread, tape, glue, and toilet paper - of course - to make the dresses.

The dresses must be wearable and prove that a person can walk in them which sounds pretty difficult to us considering how flimsy toilet paper can be!

However, there is no limit to how much paper is used for each dress.

今回取り上げる単語は、flimsyです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、　“insubstantial and easily damaged”とのことでした。

語源はおそらくflimflamという単語ではないかとのことです。ちなみにflimflamは「たわごと，ぺてん」などの意味を持ちます。（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第五版，大修館）

また上記の英和辞典で調べたところ、「〈材料が〉軽くて薄い，〈物が〉壊れやすい」などと載っておりました。また「〈同盟・協定などが〉ぎくしゃくした，〈理由・証拠などが〉薄弱な」など意味があり、目に見えない物事に対しても使用できる単語のようです。（Gomez）
