Shinzo Abe says Japan can have confidence in Donald Trump

Japan, one of the US’s closest allies, allowed itself a cautious sigh of relief after its prime minister, Shinzo Abe, described Donald Trump as someone in whom he had “great confidence” after they met in New York on Thursday.

Ahead of the meeting Japanese newspaper editorials had voiced concern over Trump’s stance on TPP, which already appears dead in the water after the Obama administration conceded it would not ratify it before the White House transition.

今回取り上げる表現は，“dead in the water”です。そのまま直訳すると，「水の中で死ぬ」となりますが，どのような意味でしょうか。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を調べてみると，「〈計画などが〉暗礁に乗り上げて，失敗して」や「〈船が〉航行不能で」と記載されていました。ここでは，前者の意味として用いられているのではないでしょうか。

さらにCollins Dictionaryを引いてみると，“unsuccessful, and with little hope of future success”と定義されていました。成功できず，希望が少ないというニュアンスが含まれているようです。語源を調べてみると，“referred to a motionless sail ship on windless day”という説があるようです。 (Nao)
