イラク第２の都市であるモスルのISからの奪還作戦が始まって１か月経ちますが、悪天候が影響を及ぼしているようです。

今回取り上げるのは“booby trap”です。
まず“booby”と聞いて、「最下位賞」の「ブービー賞」を思い出し、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で確認すると「ばか者」とありました。
次にに“booby trap”でひくと「偽装爆弾、（黒板消しを落とすような）罪のないいたずら」という意味があり、さらにハイフンがつくと（“booby-trap”）動詞で「偽装爆弾をしかける」となることがわかりました。
以前にこのブログで取り上げられた記事によると、“booby”の他の意味の「カツオドリ」を捕獲するための仕掛けからきている説があるとのことです。
ちなみに、Oxford dictionaries.com.によると、“booby”のもとはラテン語で「どもる、口ごもること」を表していたそうです。(flyingbird)
