見出しにある “like two peas in a pod” を取り上げます。直訳すると、さやの中のえんどう豆となりますが、これはいったいどのような意味をもつ表現なのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと、形容詞で「（略式）まるでうり二つで」とありました。
LDOCEには “exactly the same in appearance, behaviour etc” と定義されています。英語の定義を見ると、見た目だけではなく、行動などの類似も含んでいるようです。
さやの中を開けてみると、同じ豆が並んでいるところから、そっくりな似た者同士を表すようになったのだろうと思いました。日本語では瓜ですが、英語ではサヤエンドウになるのですね。（aqua）
