Surprise! Giraffes fall under 4 species, not one

For centuries, scientists believed all giraffes fall under one species.

But genetics now show the lanky creatures are not one species, but rather four different ones, changing the game for the world's tallest mammals.

The new findings appeared in the journal Current Biology this week, highlighting the need for further studies of the four genetically isolated species, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which was part of the research.

“changing the game”を取り上げます。

先生が執筆されている「NHK入門ビジネス英語」4月号のコラムにもありましたように、 “game changer” で「大変革をもたらす（人やもの）、形勢を一変させるもの」という意味があり、その元の形であるchange the gameは「（動物学／生物学の）これまでの常識をくつがえす」という意味です。

今回の研究結果によってキリンが4種に分類されるということと、4種は交わることはないということも発見され、他にも今までとは異なった結果が出てくる可能性があるのではないかと思いました。 (lua)
