本日は Oxford Dictionaries の記事を取り上げます。"LOL"などの最近になって使われるようになった表現だと思いがちですが、実は過去に異なった意味で用いられていたそうです。例えば、Eメールなどのテキストメッセージで、ジョークなどの後につける"LOL"(laughing out loud)ですが、過去には"lots of love"の意味で使われていました。記事では、この他に"text"や"unfriend"、"hip-hop"などが、同様に、「新しいと思われているが実は長く用いられている語」の例としてまとめられています。

There you have it. Language changes, but often slang draws upon words that were already in the English language, whether or not the speakers of slang knew it. So, next time you find yourself vexed that a fanboy is texting ‘LOL’, and you’re tempted to unfriendthem, just remember – YOLO, perhaps, but many words in the English language get to live more than once.

Oxford Dictionaries On-line では"There you have it"の形をとり、"Used to draw attention to a fact or to emphasize the simplicity of a process or action" と定義されていました(例文: simply turn the handle there's times and there you have it) 。日本語では、「(話) それでいいんです。; 簡単でしょ」となります。

上記 、ODの語義には"used to draw attention..."とありますが、関連をして、同辞書で"there"を調べてみると、数ある語義の一つに"Used to focus attention on something"とあります。"there"には間投詞として用いると「相手の注意を引く」機能を持つことがわかります。

「ほら列車が行ってしまう」
