dieselgate

日本でも前年度の同時期と比べて販売台数が落ち込んでいるフォルクスワーゲンですが，イギリスでも状況は同じようです。発端はディーゼル車に不正なソフトウエアを搭載した問題。これを記事ではdieselgateと表現しています。過去にもブログで採り上げられていますが，-gateは「…事件, …スキャンダル」という意味の接尾辞で「1972年のWatergate事件」に由来します（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。
トヨタ自動車もアメリカでのリコール問題を乗り越え今に至ることを考えると，今回のフォルクスワーゲンの問題も時間が解決してくれるのではないでしょうか。（Koyamamoto）

Volkswagen UK car sales plunge 20pc in the wake of 'dieselgate'
The emissions scandal has resulted in VW sales falling by a fifth even as the wider market returns to growth
Sales of Volkswagen cars plunged by a fifth in November compared with a year ago as the emissions scandal resulted in falling demand for German auto giant's vehicles.
Official data from industry association the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that 12,958 VW cars were registered in November, down from 16,196 during the same month a year ago.
VW has been rocked by scandal since it emerged in September that the company had fitted almost half a million diesel cars in the US with "defeat devices" that allowed them to beat pollution control tests.
