make ~ count
countには名詞で「考慮, 顧慮, 注意」という意味があり，ここでのmakes every pitch countは「1球1球を大切にする」「1球も無駄にしない」と解釈できます。同辞書にはtake count of ...（…を重視する）という用例も挙げられていました。
以前もブログで採り上げましたが，countには自動詞で「（…の）価値がある, たいせつである」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味があることも合わせて押さえておきましょう。（Koyamamoto）
Matsuzaka makes every pitch count
GOODYEAR, Ariz.--The number on his back is just one of the new things Daisuke Matsuzaka has to get used to at this year's spring training.
Of bigger importance is that it's the first time the right-hander will be fighting for a major league job.
Matsuzaka, who signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians after six seasons with the Boston Red Sox, threw in the bullpen for the second time at the team's camp here Friday.
"I don't have the luxury of taking my time," Matsuzaka said. "I have to steadily get ready, even if it's just a little at a time."
Matsuzaka threw 43 pitches, including breaking balls, four more than he tossed on the first day two days ago.
