The Wall Street JournalにあったWhy Chinese Mothers Are Superior
という記事から英語表現を拾います。
The fact is that Chinese parents can do things that would seem unimaginable—even legally actionable—to Westerners. Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, "Hey fatty—lose some weight." By contrast, Western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking in terms of "health" and never ever mentioning the f-word, and their kids still end up in therapy for eating disorders and negative self-image.

今回採り上げるのはtiptoe around~というPVです。「つまさき」からも連想できますが，このtiptoeという単語には，動詞で「つま先で立つ［歩く］」という意味があります（『プログレシッブ英和中辞典』小学館）。そして，「周囲」を表すaroundとPVを作ることで「そっと避ける」という意味が生まれます。辞書にはtiptoe (a)round~で「〜を注意して避ける」とありました（『ルミナス英和辞典』第2版，研究社）。
この他に，ブログで以前Pくんが扱ったtiptoe into~（刻々と迫る）などがあります（例：…as the game tiptoed into added time.）。
