今回はJUDI PICOULTのPICTURE PERFECTのp.287から英語の落穂拾いをします。

注目したいのは，smoke and mirrorsです。これを単語のまま捉えると「煙と鏡」となります。しかし，文脈から判断してこれは明らかに「煙と鏡」ではないことがわかります。辞書を見ると，smoke and mirrors「[単数・複数扱い]巧妙なごまかし，奇術のように錯覚を起こさせるもの」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）とありました。さらに「英辞郎 on the WEB」には，blue smoke and mirrors「人の目を欺く仕掛け，幻想，まやかし◆問題のあるプロジェクトや候補者を議会や一般大衆に売り込む時に必要とされるトリック的手法のこと」とありました。Banks to use smoke and mirrorsのように使われることもあるようです。（ゼミ生　Temple）
