イギリス王室のウィリアム王子が恋人のケイト・ミドルトンさんと一緒に友人の結婚式に参列したという記事がありました。以下はPeople.comからの引用です。

ここで取り上げる単語はdemureです。demureは「〈特に若い女性（の服装・態度）・子供などが〉内気で慎み深い，控え目な，おとなしい（modest）」という意味です（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。記事とともに載っている写真で，彼女は鮮やかな青のドレスに黒のジャケットを着用しています。あまり派手な服装ではなく，清楚な感じが多くの人に好印象を与えたのかもしれませんね。
ちなみに，demureをLDOCEで引いてみると1. quite, serious, well-behaved – especially about women in the past. 2. demure clothes do not show much of a woman’s body.とあり，modestはold-fashion　modest clothing covers the in a way that does not attract sexual interestと定義付けされています。このように英英辞典を眺めるのも，参考になります。
