気になった単語は“sentence”です。1番に思いつく意味は「文」ですが、本文では動詞として使われています。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「（人）に判決を下す」とありました。よって本文は「女性に死刑の判決を下した」となりますね。しかし、少し気になるのが“sentenced to death a woman dubbed...”の語順です。この単語は他動詞であるので、通常では“to death”と“a woman”が逆だと思います。しかし、“a woman”の後を見ると、“dubbed”と過去分詞が続いています。“sentenced a woman to death”の語源で過去分詞を続けると“to death”が後ろ過ぎてしまうので、分かりやすくするために順番を逆にしたのだと考えられます。
“sentence”の語源は、ラテン語の“sententia”「考え方、意見」です。そこから、「文」という意味と「判決」という意味に発展していったのですね。

The US Air Force has said it is investigating its apparent failure to enter information about Texas shooter Devin Patrick Kelley's past criminal history into the national database.
Ex-airman Kelly was court-martialled for domestic violence in 2012, and was barred from owning or buying guns.
But last year he was able to purchase a rifle he used in Sunday's attack on a small church outside San Antonio.
He killed 26 people and fled the scene. He was later found dead in his car.
Police said he died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being chased by armed bystanders.

pink 復習
今日の1限の授業の際に先生が “pink” には「桃色、ピンク」という意味の他に「健康、若さ、活力のみなぎっている」というニュアンスが含まれていると仰っていました。英英辞典をみると、“to be fit, healthy, and happy” と定義されていてやはり “pink” には健康体ではつらつとしたといった意義があると窺えます。
つまり、普段から日本語としてお馴染みに使われているものでも英語においてニュアンスが、私たちにとって馴染みの薄いものがあるということが見てとれます。そこで今回は、“pink” と同様に私たちが当たり前に接している語のあまり馴染みのないような意義を紹介します。
例えば “blue” を『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) で引くと、「青、群青」や「冷たさ、寒さ」といったニュアンスがあることはみなさんもご存知だと思われますが、他に「わいせつ」といったニュアンスがあり “a blue movie” (「ピンク映画」) と口語などで使われるそうです。英英辞典を見てみても “showing or mentioning sexual activity in a way that offend many people” とあるため、言葉や仕草で性的に人を攻撃する様を表しているとわかるでしょう。
次に “yellow” を見ていきたいと思います。「黄色、金色」と言ったお馴染みの意味に加え「臆病、意気地無し」や「センセーショナル、扇動」といったニュアンスがあるとわかりました。英英辞典にも “easily frightened and not brave” とあり、恐れを伴ったため前のめりになって勇敢に行動できない様子を指しているといえます。しかし、“yellow” は新約聖書に登場するイエスキリストの弟子で後にキリストを裏切る形をとったユダが着ていた着衣が黄色だった事からあまり好ましい意味で使われないそうです。
このようなことを理解して英語を使用していくと英語を第一言語として話している方とうまくコミュニケーションをとることができるのかなと思います。(Hapidra)

According to the ruling, Kakehi murdered her 75-year-old husband, Isao, common-law partners Masanori Honda, 71, and Minoru Hioki, 75, and tried to kill acquaintance Toshiaki Suehiro, 79, by having them drink cyanide.

インターネットで調べると語源は、「英国では昔ワインの酸味を和らげるためにトーストしたパンのかけらをワインに入れて飲み、パーティでは大きなワインを回し飲みして、最後に祝福される人がtoastを食べて乾杯をした」ことからきているようです。

卒ゼミ生から
白金支所でお世話になりました2016年卒業のDewです。夜分遅く、突然のご連絡、大変失礼します。
先ほど、大学時代に取ったノートを見返し、先生からいただいた言葉、教えていただいたことを読み返していると何か日々の忙しさの中で忘れていた気持ち、熱いもの、初心のようなものが心に蘇ってきました。
ノートに書かれたこと、先生からの言葉を読む中で、大学時代に田邉先生に教わったことがどれほど実践できているのか、大学時代に心に決めた教師像に近づけているのかと、この一年半の自分の取り組みを省みるに至りました。教師でありながら忙しさを言い訳にした不勉強、努力不足、甘えがあると気づかされました。
大学時代、本当に多くのことを教えていただき、大変お世話になったにも関わらず、長らく連絡を怠り、大変申し訳ございませんでした。
卒業してもなお、先生の言葉によって気づきを得ることができ、改めて、本当に感謝しています。
教職がただの「仕事」となりかけていたかもしれません。
そして、ノートに書いてある「"one of those teachers" になるな」という言葉が強く心に響きます。
これを機にまた学びはじめます。
卒業後からは変わらず、横浜にあります某高等学校に勤務をしています。初年度は高校1年生、今年度は高校2年生の担任をしています。早くも来年には卒業生を出すことになりました。
大変お忙しい中、突然の連絡、申し訳ございませんでした。また、ご挨拶に伺わせていただければ幸いです。

A remote population of frizzy-haired orangutans on the Indonesian island of Sumatra seems to be a new species of primate, scientists say.
But the purportedly newest member of the family tree of advanced animals that includes humans may not be around much longer. Their numbers are so small, and their habitat so fragmented, that they are in danger of going extinct, say the scientists who studied them.
A study published last Thursday in the journal Current Biology said there are no more than 800 of the primates, which researchers named Pongo tapanuliensis, making it the most endangered great ape species.
The researchers say the population is highly vulnerable and its habitat is facing further pressure from development.

LDOCEには “a small area or amount of something that is different from what surrounds it” と定義されています。周りと比べて違っているという説明がされています。
同英和辞典によると、語源は古期フランス語で、「小さな袋」という意味からきているそうです。服にポケットとつけると、その部分だけ他の部分から区切られるので、覚えやすいのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
