mother-in-lawを取り上げます。直訳すると「法律上の母」となりますが、『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「夫［妻］の母、義母、しゅうとめ、継母」と記載されていました。Merriam-Websterでは“grandmother of one’s spouse”と定義されています。意地悪な義母の姿がよく表現されている童話Cinderellaを想像するとin lawが想像しやすいかと思います。上記ではgrandmother-in-lawなので「義祖母、おばあさん」となります。(Kiwi girl)
