今回はtabbyを取り上げます。猫好きであるにもかかわらず、この単語を知らなかったことがとても恥ずかしいです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「ネコ」、「（家で飼っている）雌ネコ」、「意地の悪いおしゃべり女」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “a gray or brownish cat mottled or streaked with dark stripes”などの定義がありました。
以上からネコまたはブチネコ・トラネコを指すことがわかります。マタタビとtabbyをかけて覚えようと思います。

気になった語は “bollard” / bɒlərd / です。表記からはぴんとくるものがなく, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べたところ, 「(自動車の侵入を防ぐための)安全地帯の杭」とありました。インターネットで画像を検索すると, きちんと整備された道路でよくみられる, 短い柱が表示されました。日本では「ポール(pole)」と呼ばれることが多く, 自転車の走行が可能な歩道では, 減速効果をもたらします。

20日、大阪でUSJで人気のジェットコースターが緊急停止しました。
Riders trapped in mid-air on Flying Dinosaur attraction at USJ
OSAKA--About 30 passengers on a roller coaster at a popular amusement park here learned firsthand what it was like being gripped by a dinosaur for up to about a half an hour after their ride suddenly stopped on Aug. 20.
The riders on the Flying Dinosaur at Universal Studio Japan (USJ) in the city's Konohana Ward were left hanging in the pteranodon's talons with their bodies horizontal to the ground after the ride was stopped at around 4:10 p.m.
USJ said that soon after the ride set off, a child was confirmed entering the off-limits area near the platform, prompting the Flying Dinosaur to be halted for safety.

It makes sense for Japanese companies to make aggressive moves overseas. According to mergers and acquisitions advisory firm Recof Corp., overseas M&As by Japanese companies rose 13 percent in 2016 compared to the previous year, totaling about \10.5 trillion (see chart 3). There are many cases of Japanese companies paying a high purchase price, then leaving local subsidiaries to find their own way without sufficient control.

USS Fitzgerald: US Navy to discipline dozen sailors
The deputy chief of naval operations, Admiral Bill Moran, said the commanding officer and two other senior crew would no longer serve aboard the ship.
He said the Navy had lost trust and confidence in their ability to lead.
The Filipino-flagged ACX Crystal collided with the USS Fitzgerald in the early hours of 17 June in Tokyo Bay, causing a large gash below the water line of the destroyer and flooding lower decks.
The dead sailors, aged 19 to 37, were later found in their bunks, after divers gained access to damaged areas of the ship.
The commanding officer was trapped in his cabin by the force of the collision and five sailors had to use a sledgehammer to break down the door.
"Even after the door was open, there was a large amount of debris and furniture against the door, preventing anyone from entering or exiting easily," a report into the incident said.

Barcelona attack key suspect Moussa Oukabir confirmed dead
Later the same night police shot dead five attackers including Oukabir in the nearby town of Cambrils after they drove a car into pedestrians killing one woman and injuring six others.
The attackers' vehicle overturned and when the men got out they were quickly fired upon by police. One was reportedly brandishing a knife.
Police Chief Josep Lluis Trapero said one officer killed four of the attackers single-handedly.
The men were wearing what appeared to be explosive belts, police said, but these proved to be fake,
Police told media that Said Aallaa, 18, and Mohamed Hychami, 24, who they had earlier put on a wanted poster with Oukabir, were among the dead.
