　北朝鮮メディアは、韓国とアメリカによる２ヶ国間の軍事訓練が火に油を注ぐ結果になると警告しています。

North Korea has warned that the upcoming US-South Korean joint military exercise will "add fuel to the fire" and further aggravate the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The United States and South Korea will start the "Ulchi Freedom Guardian" drills on Monday. They will continue until August 31st.

In a commentary on Sunday, the official newspaper of the Korean Workers' Party, Rodong Sinmun, said the joint exercise is the most explicit expression of hostility against North Korea.

　今回取り上げる単語は “aggravate” /æɡrəveɪt/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によれば「悪化させる、深刻にさせる」という意味になります。
次に英英辞典をみると “ to make a bad situation worse ” とあり、物事がさらに悪い状況になると定義していることが言えます。
　また、 “aggravate” は“「方向へ」という意味を指す “ag” と「重い」の意を表す “grav”、「〜させる」というニュアンスがある “ate” から単語が成り立っているということがわかりました。したがってそのまま訳すと「状態を重くさせる」となり、口語的に意訳すると「悪くさせる」となったといいます。
