赤字のdish outは「(食べ物を)皿から取り分ける」という意味から転じて、「配る、惜しげなく提供する」という意味もあります(『リーダーズ英和辞典』)。この場合ですと、「[個人の]能力以外の理由で仕事が分け与えたら〜」ということになるでしょう。

今回はgas guzzlerを取り上げます。残念ながら手持ちの辞書には名詞のguzzler は記載されていなかったのですが、動詞のguzzleで、「＜車が＞ガソリンを食う」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）という語義になります。CDOを当たってみると、 ‘a car that uses a lot of fuel’と定義されていました。以上のことから、文中では「燃料を沢山消費する車」という意味になるでしょうか。(Shou-VR*)

辞書を引いてみると、文中では「＜事が＞行き詰る」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）という意味になります。ODOで調べてみると、‘stop or cause to stop making progress’と定義されていました。

アメフトの有名なゲームソフト、"Madden NFL"シリーズ最新作のカバーに使用される選手が発表されました。ちなみに、マッデンシリーズのカバーに起用された選手は散々なシーズンを送る事になるという、「マッデンの呪い」と呼ばれるジンクスがあります。

今回注目する表現は、blockbusterです。blockとbusterという二つの単語が組み合わさっている事からも想像できるでしょうか、辞書を引いて調べてみると、「(区画を吹き飛ばすほどの)大型爆弾;爆弾のように強力な物［人］」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味があり、今回の記事中では「（映画・本・音楽の）大ヒット作」(ibid)という意味で用いられています。英英でも調べてみると、"informal a book or film that is very good or successful"と定義されていました。今回取り上げた記事を参考にすると、映画や本のみに限らず、ゲームにもblockbusterという単語が使われるのですね。
今回カバーに起用される事となった選手は、すでに引退された選手なのでマッデンの呪いに関しては心配する事は無さそうですね。(Astroriver)

ボルボの乗用車部門は堅調ですが、トラック部門はあかんようです。Q1は略称で分野によっていろいろな意味があります（そういえばオーストラリアかどっかにこういう名前のビルもあったような...）。ここでは経済のfirst quarterの略で、「第一四半期」を意味します。これは１年を3か月単位の四分の一に分けた時間概念で、それぞれQ1~Q4という略号で呼ばれることがあります。（UG）
Volvo posts Q1 loss on steep sales drop
STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Swedish truckmaker AB Volvo sank into a first quarter loss as sales slid to a five-year low, the company said Thursday.
First quarter sales for the Volvo Group, which includes construction equipment and buses, plummeted 25 percent year-on-year to 58.3 billion kronor ($8.8 billion). A year ago the Goteborg-based group recorded a sales record of 77.8 billion kronor.
CEO Olof Persson said the sales drop was "primarily the result of the weak order intake in late 2012" and noted that 23 percent fewer trucks were delivered over the three-month period compared to a year ago.

とうとう学費無料の高等教育機関の最後の砦が陥落しました。記事ではなく、写真の方ですが、be late toのところでもふれた「toの勢い」（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20130425/1366839582）。
ここもforではなく、toです。for allとto allではニュアンスの微妙な違いがありますが（辞書でチェックしましょう！）、直截的なことばを好むお国柄があらわれています。（UG）
When the trustees of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art voted this week to start charging for an undergraduate degree, it ended the institution’s lengthy reign as the most famous tuition-free private college in America.
But it was never the only such place. While most colleges grapple with the growing burden of student debt, a few outliers across the country and even New York State offer a college education for the one price that looks good in any economy: nothing.
To qualify for Cooper Union’s largess, applicants had to prove themselves on the highest tier of the highest tier of academic or artistic achievement. That might strike some New Yorkers as easy compared with the requirements at some of the other free colleges.
One requires students to work on a ranch, milking cows and harvesting alfalfa. Another requires them to build a container ship. And the national service academies, of course, require years of service in support of a robust national defense.

Major landslides send Shizuoka tea field into river below
HAMAMATSU, Shizuoka Prefecture--Early morning landslides brought down part of a cliff-top tea field here on April 23, the Shizuoka prefectural government and other sources said.
An area of the cliff measuring about 90 meters in height and about 80 meters in width collapsed, sending about 50,000 cubic meters of earth and sand into the Sugigawa river flowing beneath it, the sources said.
There were no injuries or structural damages reported.
The landslides occurred in the Harunochosugi district of Tenryu Ward at around 4:20 a.m., 4:30 a.m. and 6:40 a.m., according to the sources.
The prefectural government has been keeping an eye on the area since late March when cracks were found in the ground of the tea field. As the cracks widened, the prefectural government urged 24 people of six households living on and beneath the cliff to evacuate from their houses on the night of April 21.
Some of the houses were located only about 30 meters from the collapsed area, both on and beneath the cliff.

春の勉強会
世間はGWに間もなく突入。でも常時英心っ子は、なぜか勉強会でGWを迎えます。それも白金台と馬場にある別邸ゼミとの合同と相成りました（といっても全員参加ではない）。

acute alcohol poisoning
私事で申し訳ないのですが、先日、わたしの姉が店側のミスで急性アルコール中毒になりました。烏龍茶だと思い、ストローで思いきり飲んだものがウイスキーで、飲んだあとすぐに身体が動かなくなり、救急車で運ばれたようです。その際、痙攣も起こしていたそうです。
今回、取り上げたいのは、この急性アルコール中毒です。英語でどういうのか気になったので調べてみますと、acute alcohol poisoning ［intoxication］ 、acute alcoholismなどと表すようです。（英辞朗 on the WEB）
an acute angle「鋭角」などのように、acuteの意味は「先のとがった、先端の鋭い」以外に知らなかったので、「＜病気が＞急性の」という意味を初めて知りました。（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第４版』大修館）
急性アルコール中毒といえば、お酒を飲めない体質の人に無理やり一気飲みをさせたり、大量に飲ませたりしたため（アルコールハラスメントが行われたため）に起こるものだと思っていましたが、このように店側のミスなどでも起こるのですね。
この騒動を聞いたとき、ミスをした人は学生のアルバイトなのかと思いましたが、なんとそのお店の店長のミスだったそうです。烏龍茶とウイスキーが似たようなボトルに入っていたために間違え、グラスに注いだとのことです。一歩間違えたら死亡事故を引き起こしていました。恐ろしい話です。このようなミスのないように、きちんと管理をしてほしいものです。(Nat)

今回注目するのはtough talkです。
手持ちの辞書にはありませんでしたが、英辞朗on the WEBには「強気の［高圧的な］発言、高飛車な言葉」とありました。
語源の”折れにくい”からこの「強気」な所が来てるのか気になるところです。（Sugar）

On trial for allegedly killing Williams and wounding another gang member, Kendell Harrell, on March 19, 2011, Ford, 37, of Phillipsburg testified yesterday that the fatal turn of events unfolded quickly after another gang member threatened to kill his brother, Elijah.
As that gang member appeared to be reaching in his back pocket for a gun, Williams raised his arm and Ford “started opening fire” on Williams, according to Ford. Soon after, Ford said he shot Harrell in the abdomen after Ford saw him running and reaching for what he believed was a gun.
Ford said he thought both men were going to “take my life.”
“The threat of being killed was in the atmosphere,” said Ford, later adding: “At that moment, I see my life flash before me.”
flashと述べているところから、「今までの人生がパッと浮かぶ」と解釈しました。
日本人と同じような「走馬灯のように」と似た表現をするのだなと驚きました。
調べたところ、「走馬灯のように」は別の表現でrevolving lanternとありました（英辞朗on the WEB）。
死ぬ直前まで英語で考えられていれるように英語をもっと身につけたいと思いました（Sugar）

The EconomistにはNEETに関する記事がありました。思っていた以上に深刻です。
気になるのは赤字の表現。こちらはyouth とearthquakeを足した造語で「《1960-70年代の体制社会がうけた》若者の文化・価値観による衝撃(ゆさぶり)」という意味です(『リーダーズ英和辞典』)。わかりやすいのがOxford English Dictionaryによる定義です。OEDによれば“The series of radical political and cultural upheavals occurring among students and young people in the 1960s”とあります。初出は1967年のPunchで“Mary Quant opened her first bazaar shop . . . simultaneously with the first tremors of the youthquake”とあります。初出にあるように、必ずしも政治的な意見が伴う訳ではなさそうです。
記事に戻ってみますと、『リーダーズ英和辞典』にあるような「価値観」というような目に見えない文化(culture as little c/ small c = value, belief, a way of communication, etc.)を言及するときにも使える語であることがわかります。また、記事で言及されているのは、1960年代の若者ではありませんが、現在の若者（我々の世代）にも使える語であることもわかります。(Othello)
Generation jobless - Work and the young
Yet more young people are idle than ever (see article). OECD figures suggest that 26m 15- to 24-year-olds in developed countries are not in employment, education or training; the number of young people without a job has risen by 30% since 2007. The International Labour Organisation reports that 75m young people globally are looking for a job. World Bank surveys suggest that 262m young people in emerging markets are economically inactive. Depending on how you measure them, the number of young people without a job is nearly as large as the population of America (311m).

The result is an “arc of unemployment”, from southern Europe through north Africa and the Middle East to South Asia, where the rich world’s recession meets the poor world’s youthquake. The anger of the young jobless has already burst onto the streets in the Middle East. 以前先輩も取り上げられていますが（cf.http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20100430/1272590611）、今回は先日UG先生が授業後におっしゃられた表現を取り上げさせていただきます。
ある授業の後で、先生は ”I’m a little pooped.” とおっしゃられていました。poopedには「《米・くだけて》疲れ果てた、へとへとの、へたばった」という意味があります。（『ウィズダム英和辞典 第３版』三省堂）LDOCEではAmerican English informal very tired [= exhausted]:と定義されていました。また、poopには「《米・くだけて》〈人が〉（疲れて）やめる」「〈人〉をへとへとにさせる」といった意味があります。（ibid）
