Mazda’s Bet on Gas-Saving Tech Pays Off
While the weakening yen will certainly be a boon to Japan’s most export-reliant carmaker, executives say the profit is a sign that they were right to make a tricky gamble—back in 2006—on developing improved gasoline and diesel engines, rather than pump money into the hip R&D of the time: hybrid engines. The better-engine project soon morphed into a whole set of revamps to car designs and guts, called Skyactiv, aimed at making gas guzzlers much more fuel-efficient. The goal was to produce cars that could compete with the Toyota Motor Co. 7203.TO +1.96%’s Priuses and Honda Motor Co. 7267.TO +1.27%’s Fits of the hybrid world 10 years down the road.

CDOを当たってみると、 ‘a car that uses a lot of fuel’と定義されていました。 (Shou-VR*)
