　タイで民主化成立のための総選挙の早期実施を訴える集会が催され、活動家や市民ら数百人が参加しました。

Protests against Thailand's military government have widened in the capital, Bangkok, following the national assembly's approval of a plan that may lead to a further postponement of the country's general election.

Around 200 people, including students, staged a rally in front of a monument to democracy in central Bangkok on Saturday. They called for a national election to be held at an early date.

In Thailand, political assemblies with 5 or more people have been banned since 2014, when the military seized power in a coup.

On Saturday, an anti-government activist who has orchestrated the rallies was arrested at his home in the capital. Others who participated in the demonstrations turned themselves in to police.
Local media outlets have accused the military of stalling for time, in an effort to establish a pro-military political party.

　“orchestrate” /ˈɔːkɪstrèɪt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると、「(時に不正に) 統治する、組織化する、(管弦曲を) 作曲する」といった意味がありました。次に『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみてみると “to arrange or write a piece of music so that it can be played by an orchestra” あるいは “to arrange something carefully, and sometimes unfairly, so as to achieve a wanted result” と定義されていて管弦曲の編曲や作曲をする様や、半ば強引に事を治める様を表しているのがわかります。
　日本語でも「オーケストラ」と普段から使われているため「管弦楽用に曲を変える、作る」といった意味は想像できますが “orchestrate” には、「望ましい結果を得るために巧みに組合わせる」「お膳立てする、周到に準備する、画策する」といったニュアンスを含む語であるとわかりました。クラシックなどの管弦楽団の演奏を想像してみると、演奏者は指揮者が予め決めた曲調や曲の表現方法の中でできるだけ自分にしかできない演奏をしているのがわかります。つまり演奏者は指揮者に絶対逆らえない状況下にあって、指揮者は一生懸命に演奏させる組織を作っている、またそれは望ましい結果を達成させるため各パートに役割を分配させ、最終的に様々な音を組み合わせる体系を取っていることが頷けます。したがってクラシックなどのオーケストラをみると “orchestrate” の意義を認識できると推察できます。
　同国軍政は５人以上の政治集会を原則禁じており、それを遥かに上回る規模の集会に展開されていることから警察当局はデモ参加者に出頭命令を出すなど取り締まりを強化しているそうです。(Hapidra)
