すでに取り上げられていますが、眞子様と小室さんの結婚が延期となりました。

austere /ɔːstíɚ(米), ɔːstíə(英)/ を取りあげます。LDOCEの２つ目の定義に“someone who is austere is very strict and serious – used to show disapproval”があるように「厳しい、厳格な」様子を表します。Oxford living dictionaryによるとギリシャ語でsevereを意味する語が元となっているようです。
今回の記事では「厳しい」面持ちを指していますが、他にも「飾らない人柄」を表す際にもaustereを用いることを本日のゼミで教えていただきました。同上英英辞典を確認すると“plain and simple and without any decoration”と定義されています。「彼は飾らない性格だ」は“He is an austere character.”となります。(flying bird)
