Questionable to treat ‘aori unten’ accident as case of driver negligence
The frequent incidence of people trying to obstruct other drivers, in what is called aori unten, is intolerable. Anyone could fall victim to such reckless driving. This is a serious problem.
One form of obstructive driving is tailgating, or getting extremely close to another car from behind to press the vehicle forward. There is also driving close alongside another moving car. A further such activity is moving to block another car’s path.
Reckless driving like this drew attention after an accident in which people were killed and injured along the Tomei Expressway in Kanagawa Prefecture in June. A car driven by a construction worker obstructed the path of a van, forcing the driver of the van to stop in a passing lane. The man got out of his car and was attempting to drag members of a family out of the van when a truck struck the van from behind. The married couple from the van were killed, and their two daughters and some others were injured.
Merriam-Websterには “to drive dangerously close behind another vehicle” と定義されており、危険が感じられるほど近い距離であることがわかります。
