Death of giant British rabbit adds to United Airlines’ woes
United Airlines is reviewing its handling of a giant showcase rabbit that died after being shipped across the Atlantic from Britain on one of its flights, the latest in a growing list of customer complaints.
Distraught breeder Annette Edwards told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday that a veterinarian had checked Simon — a 10-month-old, 90-centimeter-long continental rabbit — shortly before the animal was placed on a United flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Chicago’s O’Hare.
Edwards said Simon is the offspring of Darius, which the Guinness World Records lists as the world’s longest rabbit at 1.22 meters.

“We won’t know the cause of death, because we offered to perform a necropsy free of charge — that’s standard procedure — but the customer didn’t want us to perform a necropsy, and we understand,” he said.

necropsy / nékrɑpsi/ を取り上げます。似たことばにautopsyがありますが、どのような違いがあるのでしょうか。手持ちの紙辞書では見つかりませんでしたが、電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）には「（米）（動物の）検死（autopsy）」とありました。Merriam-Websterには “especially : an autopsy performed on an animal” と定義されていることから、特に動物の検死を行う際にはnecropsyを用いるようです。
語源を調べると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “"post-mortem examination," 1839, from necro- "death" + opsis "a sight" (see eye (n.)). As a verb, recorded from 1889.” と説明されており、語頭のnecroは死を意味することがわかりました。以前、ブログでflyingbirdさんが “necrosis”「壊死」を取り上げていました。（aqua）
