気になった単語は autopsy /ˈɔːtɑpsi/ です。はじめは文脈から「解剖」という訳を当てはめて読み進めました。その後『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版(大修館)で意味を引いてみると「(米)検死、検死解剖」とありました。英ではしばしば postmortem が用いられ、共に carry out, preform などと共起し表現されます。
語源はギリシャ語で、”self” の意味を表す ”autos” と “seen” を表す ”optos” の二つが組み合わされて成り立っています。またこのことから接頭辞のauto-は「自身の」という意味をもつということを学ぶことができました。
necropsyも同様の意味で用いられることはよく知られています。ちなみにnecro-は「死の、死体の」という意味でした。(ko-chi)
