3 key tricks in MMC’s falsifications
In manipulating the fuel efficiency of its minivehicle models, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. employed three major tricks that can be deemed particularly serious, including falsifying data to meet fuel efficiency targets and conducting no field tests for some models.
As mileage is one of the key aspects for consumers in deciding which model to buy, the scandal has shaken the foundation of the vehicle inspection system.
According to MMC and the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, the first major trick in the automaker’s malfeasance centered on how it measured data for so-called running resistance values.
These readings can be calculated based on, most notably, air resistance and rolling resistance mainly generated by tires. The Road Transport Vehicle Law requires what is called coasting tests to figure out those values.
