George Lucas apologises for calling Disney 'white slavers'
We all make mistakes, and occasionally speak out of turn – and now Star Wars creator George Lucas has admitted that he may have gone a little too far, after he referred to the Disney Corporation, current owners of the Star Wars franchise and the company behind new instalment The Force Awakens, as “white slavers”.
In a statement, released by Disney (it’s difficult not to picture Lucas in one of Kylo Ren’s torture cells – although we’re sure this isn’t the case), the producer-director described the remarks as “inappropriate”.
Here’s his apology in full:
I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologise. I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks.
今回取り上げるのは、“speak out of turn”という表現です。まず“out of turn”をOxford Dictionary on-lineで調べてみると、“At a time when it is not one’s turn”という定義が見つかり、そこから「順番を間違えて」といった意味があると分かりました。しかし、この意味だと今回の記事には合いません。そこで『ジーニアス英和辞典』で確認してみると、上記のほかに「｟略式｠早まって、軽率に」を意味していると分かりました。そのため、今回の場合の“speak out of turn”は「不適切な発言をする、立場をわきまえず出過ぎたことを言う」と表せます。(ninetails)
