気になったのは、in dribs and drabsです。似たような単語が２つ並ぶ表現ですが、どのような意味になるのでしょうか。まず、『ウィズダム英和辞典』を確認したところ、(in) dribs and drabsで「ほんの少数ずつ、ほんのわずかずつ」とありました。dribsは単体で使われることはなく、基本的にこのフレーズで用いられるそうです。しかし、goo辞書にはin dribsと省略形も載っていたので、近年はdribs単体でも使うようになったようです。また、LDOCEでは“in small irregular amounts or numbers over a period of time”と定義されています。語源が気になったので調べたところ、LDOCEには“probably from drib “to fall in small drops”とおり、同根の単語としてdribbleが示されていました。さらに、その後に続くdrabは同じくdribから来ているそうです。(Blue Sky)
