取り上げる表現は“dote on”です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』には、「〔…を〕溺愛[熱愛]する」との意味が書かれており、主に“on”や“upon”と共に使用されるようです。Macmillan Dictionaryには“dote on someone”で“to love someone very much, often so much that you do not notice their faults”との定義があり、日本語の「溺愛」と同じニュアンスを持つことが分かりました。
“dote”の語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryでみてみると、この語の第一語義が「もうろくする、ぼける」であるように、もともとは1200年代に"to be feeble-minded from age"という意味で英語では使われるようになったのだそうです。そこから15世紀頃に"to be infatuated"という意味を持つようになりました。
溺愛という意味から想像すると、人を愛する意味の方が根源にありそうですが、どちらかというとネガティブな意味から発展してきた語であるということが分かりました。(bookmark)
