R.S.V.P. 復習

1940年公開の映画、「哀愁（Waterloo Bridge）」から表現をとりあげます。

戦争で亡くなったと思われていたロイとの感想の再会を果たしたマイラは、ロイとともに彼の実家があるスコットランドに向かっています。

Roy: The ancestral acres, Myra. Shall I point out the things we’re product of no matter how boring?
Myra: Oh, it’s beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Roy: Mother will take you all over this. You mustn’t tell her I showed you a thing. See it all for the first time with her. Be enthusiastic, too.
Myra: That won’t be difficult.

Myra: It must be difficult to spend one’s childhood in a place like this.
Roy: Yes, it’s great when you’re young. When you really young.
Myra: Oh, Roy. Do you think of yourself as old?
Roy: No one who’s been in this war is young.
Myra: No, that’s true.
Roy: Do you remember Longfellow’s line, “The thoughts of youth are long long thoughts.”?

Roy: Myra?
Myra: Yes, Roy,
Roy: we’re awfully good together, don’t you think?

Roy: R.S.V.P.
I mean that was a question that requires an answer, yes or no.
Myra: Yes.
Roy: Your answer is correct.

今回取り上げる表現は “R.V.S.P.”です。『ジーニアス英和大辞典（大修書店）』で確認ししてみますとフランス語 “Répondez s'il vous plaît”の略で「折り返し返事されたし（Please reply）」という意味であることが分かりました。この表現は招待状などの書状の終わりに書く定型句としてよく使われているようです。

なお、ロイが話しているワーズワースの詩の一節は「失われし青春（My lost youth）」からのものであり、この映画の名場面です。（Inaho）
