GOLETA, Calif. – Teams of white-suited cleanup workers spent another day Thursday scooping up black goo off the sand of a remote, pristine beach north of here, capturing more than 7,700 gallons of oil and water mix from a ruptured pipeline that spilled at least 21,000 gallons into the ocean.
The oil sullied water along a nine-mile stretch of craggy coast famed for its idyllic scenery and its affluent neighbors. On Thursday, it became clear that Tuesday's spill had also begun to impact wildlife. Dolphins frolicked playfully at the spill site, seemingly unaware of the petroleum stew on the water's surface. State wildlife officials, who had 300 responders on scene, recovered five oil-covered brown pelicans that needed care.

"It's a bummer," says Crary, manager of Velo Pro Cyclery in Goleta. "We've got an out-of-state oil company (messing) up a line and causing a lot of oil seepage."
Memories remain strong here of an offshore oil platform blowout off the coast here in 1969 that blackened beaches with oil. Offshore oil drilling has driven the local political agenda here and next door in Santa Barbara ever since, though platforms still dot the horizon.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Plains All-American, the pipeline's operator, had accumulated 175 safety and maintenance violations since 2006.
On the Goleta oceanfront, retiree Bill Tierney and his daughter, Neive, said they turned away at El Capitan State Beach, just south of Refugio, for a morning of landscape painting.
"It's horrible," he said of the spill. "It's what we're always afraid of happening."
Chandler French, manager at the Beachside bar and cafe next to the pier in Goleta, was hoping for the best.
So far, he said, no problems, as he surveyed a restaurant packed with customers. For him, the oil spill put a dent in his weekend plans. "I can't go Jet-skiing in the oil."
