The researchers released wild and farm-raised Japanese eels carrying ultrasonic emitters near an egg-laying area around the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean in 2010 and in waters near Japan in 2012. A total of 11 wild eels and five farm-raised eels were released. The researchers gathered data on the depths and temperatures of where the eels were swimming. While aboard tracking vessels, the team measured the sun's luminosity and investigated its relationship to the depths the eels were swimming.
