今回取り上げる表現は、“hitherto”です。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishを見てみると、“up to this time”と記載されていました。そのまま訳すと、「この時までに」となります。日本語の意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「いままで、従来の、今のところまだ」とありました。この表現は、かたい表現で、しばしば完了形の際に用いられるそうです。また語源を調べてみると、中期英語の“hiderto”から来ています。(Nao)
