UG先生からご指名質問を頂きました。cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20130326/1364275295 多少不安ですが、回答させて頂きたいと思います。今回は、以下の記事のto regain a little faceの意味についてです。
Sumo: Hakuho makes new record, wins ninth title with no loss on final day
Yokozuna Hakuho established a new gold standard at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament by sending rival Harumafuji to the dirt to win his final match on March 24 and mark an unprecedented ninth perfect 15-0 finish.
Harumafuji, who had a perfect run in January but has been off target this time, drove Hakuho all the way to the brink following the initial clash and looked like he just might be able to regain a little face after bombing out of the title race with five losses going into the final showdown.
But his momentum didn't last long. Hakuho--the stronger of the two--lured him into a grappling duel then unceremoniously shoved him off his feet.
Hakuho had already secured the championship title--his 24th--when he won his 13th bout on March 22. That in itself was quite a feat. The championship means the 28-year-old is tied with the former yokozuna Kitanoumi for the fourth-most titles ever. But Hakuho's bigger goal was to get the coveted perfect finish, an achievement he had accomplished a record-matching eight times before.
His win against Harumafuji puts him in uncharted territory. Yokozuna legends Taiho and Futabayama both had eight perfect tournaments.

日馬富士は初場所では全勝優勝を収めた一方、春場所ではすでに５敗して、優勝争いから外れている状況で春場所千秋楽を迎えていました。記事中のto regain a little faceの直後の文章からも、千秋楽を迎える前に、すでに５敗して優勝争いからは外れていたという事が読み取れます。
その事を抑えた上で、to regain a little faceに注目してみたいと思います。faceは多義語で様々な意味がありますが、ここでは「メンツ,体面,評判」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味で用いられているのではないでしょうか。
regainも念のために調べてみると、「〈もとの場所〉に戻る,復帰する」(『ジーニアス英和辞典 第４版』大修館書店)という意味もあるようなのですが、ここでは「〈人などが〉（物・事）を（…から）取り戻す,取り返す,回復する（from）」（ibid）という意味であると考えると、本題のto regain a little faceの意味は「少しでもメンツを取り戻す」という意味ではないでしょうか。
実際に日馬富士と白鵬の割を観てみると、記事の通り最初は日馬富士が勝つのではないかという様な勝負の流れでしたが、最後は白鵬でした。次の夏場所は一体どうなるのか、今から楽しみな人も多いのではないでしょうか。（Astroriver）
