trois etoiles

ついにやってくれました。奈良県から初めて，ミシュラン三ツ星を獲得した料理店が誕生したようです。本文にある"No longer can anyone say, 'Nara ni umai mono nashi (Nothing is tasty in Nara).' "という言葉通り，誰にも「奈良にうまいものなし」とは言ってほしくありません。それでは，今回はJT online（10/21/11付け）より「三ツ星」という表現を紹介します。

The shy 58-year-old Yamamura explained how he rose from humble culinary roots to become the first Michelin trois etoiles chef in Nara. His parents ran a truck-stop eatery in his native Kumamoto, and he learned the basics of his trade whilst taking evening classes at Nara's Wakabane Chori Senmon Gakko cooking school, working by day in the kitchens of famed Nara ryokan Kikusuiro, also honored in the guide.

今回注目したのはtrois etoilesです。つづりから，英語ではないことが明らかです。辞書によると，troisは「3(three)」とあり，etoileは「星，星形のもの」とありました（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版，研究社）。つまり，「三ツ星」という意味です。また両方フランス語であることも『リーダーズ英和辞典』（同上）に記されていました。Michelinもchefもフランス語関連の言葉であるため，Michelin three stars chefよりMichelin trois etoiles chefのほうがしっくりくる気がします。

全く関係のない話ですが，自分がよく知っている本屋さんでミシュランマンとあのせんとくんがガイドブック発売のPRをしていたそうです。今度帰省した時に，立ち寄ってみたいと思います。（ゼミ生 Lbow-Shoulder）
