The Premium Friday campaign aimed at boosting consumer spending by encouraging people to finish work early on the last Friday of every month marked one year since its launch on Friday.
The campaign is struggling to take root despite becoming widely known. With only a small number of people able to finish work early, the intended effect of shoring up personal consumption has been limited.

The Premium Friday Committee, comprising government and industry officials, held an event at the National Art Center in Tokyo’s Roppongi district on Friday morning to mark the first anniversary of the campaign’s launch.
“So far, we’ve called on service providers and companies to take part in the campaign,” said Kunio Ishizuka, a vice chair of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren). “In the second year, we want individual workers to use Premium Fridays as an opportunity to try new things.”

今回取り上げる記事はshore up / ʃɔː ʌp /です。
shoreという単語が「岸、沿岸」という名詞としての意味があるのは知っていましたが動詞としてはどう使うか気になったので調べてみました。
そこで、upと共起しているので何かあげるといったような意味があると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「〈屋根・壁など〉を支える」、「・・・を支援する」とありました。
また、名詞として「〈船体・建物・へいなどの〉支柱、突っ張り棒」という意味もあります。
プレミアムフライデーはその認知度とは反対に実際に実施できている企業は少なく、今回の調査でも、いつもより早く退社できた人は全体の11%に留まりました。また、企業の利用率は3%だそうです。
過労死という言葉が生まれるほど、仕事というものに対して特に真摯に向き合ってきた日本なので、悠々自適な月末の金曜日午後を享受できるようプレミアムフライデーの実施に向け様々な案を考えていく必要があると思いました。(sixth-dan)

About 90 percent of 2,000 respondents to a survey conducted by the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry and other entities know about the Premium Friday campaign. As of Feb. 16, applications to use the campaign logo at stores and other locations nearly doubled to 8,182 from the initiative’s launch.
However, according to the survey, an average of only 11 percent of people said they were able to finish work early on the last 12 Premium Fridays. Only 22 percent of the about 1,130 companies that took steps to boost sales on Premium Fridays said they saw positive effects.

気になった表現はtake rootです。この記事のタイトルでも使われている表現です。takeという語を見るとはじめに「取る」という意味が頭に浮かぶ人が多いと思います。私も最初にtake「取る」root「根」で「根を取る、やめる」のような意味で考えました。しかし文脈とまったく合わなかったので『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で引いてみると「〈考え・制度などが〉〔…に〕根付く；定着する、根をおろす[in, among]」と載っていました。今回の記事では「プレミアムフライデーは広く知られているのにも関わらす、未だに定着していない」という文脈で用いられています。また同記事内ではtake steps「措置を講じる」というtakeを用いた別の表現も使用されています。この表現はstepの持つ「処置、手段、行動」という意味とtakeが共起しています。学生である私には馴染みの薄いイベントですが、今後社会に出ていく者として関心を向けていく必要があると感じました。(ko-chi)

フィギュアスケートの団体戦で、韓国ペアの女子選手の衣装が脱げそうになるハプニングがあった。演技中に背中のホックが外れ、なんどもはだけそうになったが、なんとか防いで最後まで滑りきった。

今回取り上げるのは“wardrobe” /wˈɔːdr`əʊb/ という単語です。ここの文章では僕の推測では衣装、身につけているものというでした。この時なぜ“clothing”や“costume”ではないのかなと疑問を持ちました。“wardrobe”を(『ジーニアス英和辞典第五版』大修館)を調べると「洋服だんす、(個人の)持ち衣装、衣服、(劇団・TV・映画の)衣装部」とありました。この意味から公の前で着る衣類のことをそう呼ぶのだと考えました。
“clothing”は「〔集合的に〕衣料品」とあったので意味合いが特定のものに使うのとは違うものでした。一方、“costume”は「(ぶたい・映画・パーティー用の)衣装」という意味があったので近いニュアンスを感じます。ちなみに語幹を調べてみたところ“ward”には「保護」“robe”は「式服、礼服、長くてゆったりした外衣」とあったので「洋服だんす」という意味はここから来ているとわかりました。バスローブ(bathrobe)もここからきています。現在11時半。お風呂に入らなければ(汗) (Creative)

先日、長期留学事前研修中に出てきたplagiarismが下記の記事にも記載されていたので、復習の意を込めて取り上げたいと思います。剽窃や盗作を賛美する動き同様に、最高のお世辞なのではとの声も上がっています。感化、借用、参照、剽窃、これらの間の線引きは一体何なのでしょうか。

気になったのは見出しにあるplagiarism /ˈpleɪdʒərɪz(ə)m/ です。the highest form of ~ で「〜の最高の現れ」、in praise of ~ で「〜の賛美、賞賛」と訳し、接尾語のismには「行動、状態、主義、理論、特性、教義」の意味が含まれる場合が多いことから、初めは「〜主義」が賛美をうけていると解釈しました。しかし実際の意味は根本から違っていました。『スーパー・アンカー』（第五版、学研プラス）で引いたところ、「（他人の文章・思想などの）盗作、盗用、剽窃、剽窃したもの」と表記されていました。またOnline Etymologyによると、語源はギリシャ語のplagionからラテン語のplagium、そしてラテン語のplagiariusに英語のismが付帯して現在のplagiarismが成り立ったとのことです。
留学期間中には多くの課題が出されるのはもちろんのこと、特にessayは頻繁に書くことになりそうです。そんな中で誤って他人の著書の一部分を剽窃してしまい退学処分なんてことが絶対に起こらぬよう、英語でのessayの基本ルールは再度網羅し、引用サイトの記載には気をつけようと改めて思いました。（broccoli）

今回取り上げる表現は、thin on the ground です。直訳をすると「地面にまばらにある」となりますが、いまいち伝わらないので以下で確認していきます。
OED で thin を確認すると、“Having few parts or members relative to the area covered or filled” とあります。続いて thin on the ground を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“to exist only in small numbers or amounts” とあり、LDOCE には “if a particular type of person or thing is thin on the ground, there are very few available” と定義されていました。
以上のことから thin on the ground は「数が少ない」という訳がつけられます。地面に石か何かがまばらに置かれている状況を想像をするとわかりやすいと思います。今回は Old-school Republicans が主体とされているので、ただ少ないということを示すだけでなく、点在しているというニュアンスを出したかったのではないかと思いました。 (OkaUchi)

気になった単語は”blueprint”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「（建物、機械などの）青写真、設計図、詳細な計画」とありました。また、そこから転じて、”genetic blueprint” で「遺伝情報」という意味にもなるそうです。”cyanotype”でも「青写真」となります。
19世紀後半、設計図が作られる際に、青の地に白の線が描かれたり、白の地に青の線が描かれたりしたことから、”blueprint”という名前がついたそうです。
シュウ酸第二鉄アンモニウムやクエン酸第二鉄アンモニウムにフェリシアン化カリウムを作用させることによって青色になるという原理を利用したものが”blueprint”です。(Large Lake)

sandbarに注目しました。文脈から天橋立のことを指していることが分かります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「（波・潮流などによる河口の細長い）砂州」と載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、a long, narrow sandbank, especially at the mouth of a riverと定義されております。
ちなみにsandbankも「砂州，浅瀬」などの意味を持ちます。英英の定義にもある通り、細長いものをsandbarと呼ぶようです。画像検索をしたところ、sandbankは小さな島のような形、sandbarは細長い形とそれぞれ少し違うことが分かります。（Gomez)

気になった語は reseed / risíd / です。つづり字を直訳すると「再び種をまく」となりますが, 一体何を意味しているのでしょうか。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で確認したところ, 「追いまきをする」「自生する」とありました。本文では, 動作の作用が行う者自身に返ってくることを表す動詞として用いられ, 目的語にはideaがきています。
さらにMerriam-Webster.comによると, "to maintain (itself) by self-sown seed"と定義されていました。このほか, 同じく再帰動詞 (reflexive verb) の用法を併せもつ単語として, dress (ex. I dress myself.) が挙げられます(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)

A Russian bobsledder who tested positive for a banned substance at the Pyeongchang Olympics has admitted doping and been disqualified from the games.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Nadezhda Sergeeva has accepted a provisional suspension but reserves the right “to seek the elimination or reduction” of her expected ban from the sport.

私の故郷が、朝日新聞に載っていたので思わず取り上げてしまいました。文化の内容からです。

本日取り上げる言葉は、Midas touch です。以前のブログにも取り上げられていましたが、改めて紹介します。『スーパー・アンカー英和辞典』（第四版、学研出版）によると、「[the〜] 金もうけの才能」と記されていました。では、Midas/ˈmaɪdəs/ とは何かを、同辞書で確認してみます。「（ギリシャ神話）ミダス王（手）に触れるものすべてを黄金に変える力をディオニソス神に授けられて困ったフリギュアの王」と記されていました。省略部分では、岐阜県大垣市のある会社が麻雀や将棋の駒を黄金に装飾し、現在では人気の製品となっているということが書かれています。「ミダス王の見えざる手」ですね。（WREN）
chap 復習
今年の冬、私の手は乾燥ですごく荒れ、ハンドクリームが手放せない状態です。「手荒れ」は英語でなんというのか気になったので調べてみました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版,大修館）とインターネットを使って調べると、rough hands /rˈʌf hˈænd/とchapped hands/ tʃæpt / があるようです。rough handsは確かにと思いました。chap/ tʃˈæp/は、辞書に「(皮膚の)ひびわれ,あかぎれ」や「（手・足などが〔を〕あかぎれになる〔する〕）」という意味だと書いてありました。rough handsよりもchapped handsの方がよりひどい手荒れであり、寒さによるものであるということがわかりました。
ちなみに、chilblain /tʃílbleɪn/はforest-biteよりも症状の軽い「しもやけ」という意味だそうです。
cul-de-sac 復習
AsahiWeekly (Sun, Feb 25, 2018)Moviesのページ（P.9）に現在上映中の映画「ビッグ・シック ぼくたちの大いなる目ざめ」が特集されていました。映画シーンの会話が何箇所か取り上げられていてその中でcul-de-sac / kˈʌldəs`æk / という表現が気になりました。
Pakistani woman who just happens to be driving by our house, which is in a cul-de-sac.という文脈と英語以外の言語だということから意味を推測できませんでした。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べるとフランス語で「行き止まり、袋小路」「窮地、行き詰まり」「〔解剖〕盲管」とありました。LDOCEではa road which is closed at one end, so that there is only one way in and outやan unhelpful situation in which you cannot make any more progressと定義されています。英語ではdead endやblind alleyで言い換えられます。
今回パキスタン出身の主人公クメイルがcul-de-sacを用いているのはなぜか疑問に思いました。単純にイギリスやアメリカでも外来語としてこの表現が用いられているからなのでしょうか。(Kiwi girl)
