USAG has admitted dragging its feet on alerting the authorities when it learned of abuse allegations against Assar in 2015.

“molestation” はもともとラテン語で「厄介な、悩ませる」という意義を含む “molestus” という語から派生した名詞形であることがわかりました。また、“molestus” の ”mole“ には「負荷」というニュアンスを伴い、そこから人に負荷を与えるという意義で「厄介な、悩ませる」という意味で使われるようになったそうです。ちなみに「痴漢をする人」や「(悪い意味で) 定期的に子供への接触を繰り返す人」を ”molester“ というそうです。

bivalve
関東の古東京湾沿いをサイクリングすれば自分で化石を見つけられるかもしれません。
Cycling around the Kanto countryside, one occasionally spots a sheer cliff where the geological strata have been exposed. Sometimes the lower strata consist of extensive beds of fossil shells that are weathering out of the soil. These shells were deposited naturally on the floor of an ancient shallow sea, called Paleo Tokyo Bay, that covered all of the modern-day Tokyo area during the last interglacial period about 120,000 years ago.
Remains of whales and giant sharks have been recovered from these layers. By far and away the most abundant fossils, however, are those of bivalve molluscs. These include numerous species of clam, ribbed cockles, oysters and scallops.

語源はラテン語のsqualereで “be dirty”の意味を持ちます。 英英辞典の定義から分かるように、ただ単なる不潔さを表す単語ではありません。言いづらいですが、孤独死をして何か月もそのままにされた遺体の状態を指す単語として適しているなと思いました。(Gomez)

Nonaka, a former member of the House of Representatives, collapsed during a meeting in Kyoto last November and was rushed to hospital.

複数人で食事をした時のお会計で一人が「自分が全部出します。」と言ったあとに何人かが「いや割り勘にしましょう。」と提案したのを振り切って「いや、ここは私に払わしてください。」といって最終的にはその一人が全額払う場面って日常よくありますよね。またある一人が席を譲った時に、譲られた一人に「結構です。」と断れたことを交わして「どうぞ遠慮なさらず。」と席を譲るシチュエーションも頻繁に見ることができますよね。
こういった自分が善意だと感じて起こした行為を一度避けられた後に、それでも相手に対しその行為を行いたいという際に英語で 「ぜひ、お願いします」という意味合いを含む “I insist” を使うと相手に自分がしたい気持ちが伝わるそうです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると “insist” には「強く主張する」という意味があり、直訳すると「私は強く主張します。」と自己中心的なニュアンスが伝わって来ますが、会話表現においての “I insist” は相手が自分に遠慮したり気を遣っていることが本意ではないと感じて自分からもう一度提案してみるという相手を思いやう場面で使われるそうです。
普段の生活で自分を出そうとする事を躊躇ってしまいがちですが、善意や相手が喜ぶだろうと感じた行為は自分から率先して行うことは良いことですね (Hapidra)
