　関東の古東京湾沿いをサイクリングすれば自分で化石を見つけられるかもしれません。

Cycling around the Kanto countryside, one occasionally spots a sheer cliff where the geological strata have been exposed. Sometimes the lower strata consist of extensive beds of fossil shells that are weathering out of the soil. These shells were deposited naturally on the floor of an ancient shallow sea, called Paleo Tokyo Bay, that covered all of the modern-day Tokyo area during the last interglacial period about 120,000 years ago.
Remains of whales and giant sharks have been recovered from these layers. By far and away the most abundant fossils, however, are those of bivalve molluscs. These include numerous species of clam, ribbed cockles, oysters and scallops.

　bivalve/bάɪv`ælv/を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べると「二枚貝、二枚貝の」とあり、カキ・ハマグリ・アサリなどの類似した２つから成る貝を指すことがわかりました。
bivalve はvalveの派生語であり、接頭辞のbi-はtwiceやtwoの意味を持ちます。例を挙げるとbiweekly「1週間おきの」があります。またvalveはラテン語の volvere「回転する、巻く」を語源とし、「（液体・気体などの流れを調節する）弁、（心臓・血管の）弁」の他に「貝殻の片方」を意味します。LDOCEには“any sea animal that has two shells joined together”と定義されています。
