squalor /ˈskwɒlə/ が気になったため、調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、 「不潔さ，むさ苦しさ；卑劣」と載っておりました。また。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、 “the state of being extremely dirty and unpleasant, especially as a result of poverty or neglect”と定義されております。
語源はラテン語のsqualereで “be dirty”の意味を持ちます。 英英辞典の定義から分かるように、ただ単なる不潔さを表す単語ではありません。言いづらいですが、孤独死をして何か月もそのままにされた遺体の状態を指す単語として適しているなと思いました。(Gomez)
