(CNN) — Ephemeral and poetic, shooting stars are among the world's most beautiful natural wonders.
But come 2018, these fleeting fireballs will no longer be left to chance.
Japanese space start-up ALE is developing the technology to deliver on-demand man-made meteors, which could turn the night sky into a blank canvas.
"Imagine a future, where you can use our meteors for international fireworks displays, a proposal for marriage, or a special memorial," says Shinsuke Abe, ALE's research director and Nihon University aerospace engineering professor.
The grand showcase for this outer space entertainment could be the opening of the 2020 Olympics, in Tokyo, which ALE is rumored to have bid to take part in.
Meanwhile, in 2018, the company plans to launch its first satellite into orbit, and present its debut show in the same year, when that satellite has reached its position.
"We want people to look up, not down at the ground," says Abe. "People in Japan are so busy everyday and they need more culture and science in their lives to bring them closer to nature, and to relax."

22日, 京都市左京区では「鞍馬の火祭」が盛大に行われ, 今年も500本におよぶ松明が見物客らを魅了しました。

KYOTO — About 500 pine torches light up the night sky halfway up Mt. Kurama in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, on Oct. 22.
The Kurama Fire Festival attracts many visitors and is held at Yuki Shrine, Kurama Temple’s tutelary shrine. The festival is derived from a historical event in 940 when a deity enshrined at the Imperial Palace in Kyoto was transferred to Kurama. People welcomed the deity by lighting pine torches.
On Oct. 22 after sunset, parishioners holding torches paraded through the town and ignited torches placed in front of homes. At about 9 p.m., people holding large torches weighing about 100 kilograms gathered at the main gate of Kurama Temple. It was Lena Okajima's childhood in Tottori, roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Osaka, that sparked the ALE founder's fascination with space.
The least populous prefecture in Japan, Tottori enjoys clear night skies and frequent displays of shooting stars, most notably the spectacular annual Leonid meteor shower.
"A lot of people have thought about (creating fake meteor showers) but Okajima was the first one to invest years of research into this," says Rie Yamamoto, ALE's global strategy director.
"Okajima watched meteor showers when she was younger, but living in Tokyo (as an adult) she couldn't really see them, so that played a part in her inspiration."
A former investment banker with a PhD in astronomy, in 2011 Okajima founded ALE, garnering private funding and collaborating with academics from three academic institutions.
Her ambition? To bring shooting stars to Tokyo.

今回は Leonidを取り上げます。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、Leonid(複数形)で “an annual meteor shower with a radiant in the constellation Leo, reaching a peak about 17 November”と載っておりました。
ちなみに “Leonid” のleoは、ラテン語のleo, leonが語源とされております。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「しし座流星群」と書かれておりました。またLeoのみで「しし座」を意味します。
Leonidのみでも「しし座流星群」を表しますが、記事内では “Leonid meteor shower”と書かれております。 “meteor shower”は「流星雨」を意味し、「流星群の特に著しく多いもの」を指します。（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』大修館、『デジタル大辞泉』小学館）

Sonyが発売したPlayStationのVRは，話題を呼びました。しかし，初期費用が９万円以上かかるため，費用対効果が良いのかどうかが消費者にとって分かりにくいようです。

偶然，何度も授業で出てきた“the jury is still out on”が使われている記事を見つけたので取り上げさせて頂きます。
意味は，「について結論が出ていない」で，陪審はまだ法外で議論中であるということから来ています（『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店）。さらに，Cambridge Dictionaryを引いてみると，“no decision or agreement has been made about a situation, esp. because there is not enough information”と定義されていました。情報不足のため結論が出ていないといったニュアンスが含まれているようです。(Nao)

International banks’ “hands are quivering over the relocate button,” Anthony Browne, chief executive officer of the banking lobby group the BBA, wrote Sunday in The Observer newspaper. “Many smaller banks plan to start relocations before Christmas; bigger banks are expected to start in the first quarter of next year.”
Without identifying any banks by name, he said lenders can’t wait until the last minute and have to “plan for the worst,” especially because “public and political debate at the moment is taking us in the wrong direction.”

今回取り上げるのはexodusです。
ゼミやブログで何度も取り上げられているように、「大移動」を表し、『旧約聖書』の「出エジプト」のエピソードから由来します。“the Exodus”のかたちで「エジプト脱出」となります。
Oxford dictionaries.com.によると、ギリシャ語が語源となっており“out of”の“ex-”と“way”の“hodos”が組み合わさって出来ているそうです。
この場合は「海外移転」をまさしく文字通り表す「海外脱出」の訳がぴったりだと思いました。(flyingbird)

マルタでEU国境当局者らが乗る軽飛行機が墜落し、少なくとも5人が死亡しました。

defence officials and two other people died when a surveillance plane crashed shortly after take-off at Malta International Airport.
The light aircraft was setting off on a mission over the Mediterranean around 07:20 (05:20 GMT) when it nose-dived and disintegrated in a ball of flames.
There was no explosion prior to the crash, according to eyewitnesses.
Malta said the flight had been part of a French operation to track illicit trafficking of people and drugs.
An investigation into the causes of the crash is to be conducted by the French defence ministry.
The airport has re-opened with some disruption expected to the day's scheduled flights.

influx 復習
いつにも増して渋谷駅前が大混雑する日が近づいてきました。今年は部分的に車両の通行止めをするなどして対策に乗り出すようです。
Shibuya Station area to face traffic bans around Halloween
Having witnessed the massive influx of young people to the area around Shibuya Station in Tokyo on Halloween last year and the year before, the Metropolitan Police Department this year is planning to make the streets in the area partially vehicle-free.
The police will also tighten security to prevent crushes and stampedes from dense crowding as well as terrorist attacks on major events known to be soft targets.
According to sources, road access to the area will be temporarily restricted on the basis of how congested the streets are at any time over the four days from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. This is the first time Halloween has become a reason for restricting traffic in Tokyo.
More than 90 events will be held in the area this year, but because Halloween (Oct. 31) falls on a Monday, most of these events are scheduled for the preceding days from Oct. 28 to 30. Young people in costumes are expected to overcrowd the sidewalks, spilling into the streets and making traffic dangerous for pedestrians and drivers.

今回取り上げるのは、以前裏ゼミでも学習したinfluxです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「（普通は単数形で）流入、到来、殺到」と載っておりました。LDOCEでは “the arrival of large numbers of people or large amounts of money, goods etc, especially suddenly” と定義されております。人だけではなくお金や物などについて言う時にも用いられ、そして特にそれらが急に押し寄せる時のことを表すようです。influxの前にくる語としては “massive/great/huge etc influx” などが挙げられています。
今回は渋谷駅前が若者たちでごった返す様子を “the massive influx of” で表現しています。（aqua）

ベルギー南部のワロン地域が紹介されております。ワロン地方は人口360万人ほどの地区です。この地区が注目を浴びたのは，EUとカナダの自由貿易協定（FTA）に対してワロン州政府が意義を唱えたためです。ベルギーは連邦政を取っているため，州政府の承認がなければ国として協定を結ぶことが出来きません。
記事の中で気になった単語は"googling"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）で調べると"google"で「(…について)検索エンジンで調べる, ググる」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"Search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet using the search engine Google"と定義されております。ワロン州によってFTAが批准できない状態になったため，多くの人がそれまで脚光を浴びていなかったワロンを検索するということです。(ume)

本講演では、まず昨今の言語学習におけるモチベーション理論の発展に関して概観する。そのうえで現場教員がどのようにして学習者のモチベーションを理解し、言語学習のサポートをできるかを考察する。また講演の最後には、参加者の方々に自らの外国語学習のモチベーションの変化を共に振り返っていただきながら、どのような要因で外国語学習者のやる気が変化しうるかを議論する。
