influx 復習

いつにも増して渋谷駅前が大混雑する日が近づいてきました。今年は部分的に車両の通行止めをするなどして対策に乗り出すようです。

Shibuya Station area to face traffic bans around Halloween

Having witnessed the massive influx of young people to the area around Shibuya Station in Tokyo on Halloween last year and the year before, the Metropolitan Police Department this year is planning to make the streets in the area partially vehicle-free.

The police will also tighten security to prevent crushes and stampedes from dense crowding as well as terrorist attacks on major events known to be soft targets.

According to sources, road access to the area will be temporarily restricted on the basis of how congested the streets are at any time over the four days from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. This is the first time Halloween has become a reason for restricting traffic in Tokyo.

More than 90 events will be held in the area this year, but because Halloween (Oct. 31) falls on a Monday, most of these events are scheduled for the preceding days from Oct. 28 to 30. Young people in costumes are expected to overcrowd the sidewalks, spilling into the streets and making traffic dangerous for pedestrians and drivers.

今回取り上げるのは、以前裏ゼミでも学習したinfluxです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「（普通は単数形で）流入、到来、殺到」と載っておりました。LDOCEでは “the arrival of large numbers of people or large amounts of money, goods etc, especially suddenly” と定義されております。人だけではなくお金や物などについて言う時にも用いられ、そして特にそれらが急に押し寄せる時のことを表すようです。influxの前にくる語としては “massive/great/huge etc influx” などが挙げられています。
今回は渋谷駅前が若者たちでごった返す様子を “the massive influx of” で表現しています。（aqua）
