The smell of rotting flesh will soon be wrinkling noses in the Bronx.
A corpse flower is on the verge of blooming at the New York Botanical Garden, possibly today or Thursday.
The plant’s common name comes from the stench it produces to attract pollinators like carrion beetles and flies.

ABU DHABI (Reuters) — A solar-powered aircraft successfully completed the first fuel-free flight around the world on Tuesday, returning to Abu Dhabi after an epic 16-month voyage that demonstrated the potential of renewable energy.
The plane, Solar Impulse 2, touched down in the United Arab Emirates capital at 4:05 a.m. on Tuesday.
It first took off from Abu Dhabi on March 9, 2015, beginning a journey of about 40,000 kilometers and nearly 500 hours of flying time.
Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, the Swiss founders of the project, took turns piloting the aircraft, which has a wingspan larger than a Boeing 747 but weighs no more than an average family car.
“More than an achievement in the history of aviation, Solar Impulse has made history in energy,” Piccard, who piloted the plane on the last leg, told a large crowd on landing.
“I’m sure that within the next 10 years we’ll see electric airplanes carrying 50 passengers on short- to medium-haul flights,” he said in a statement.
He said the technologies used on Solar Impulse 2 could be used on the ground in daily life to halve emissions of carbon dioxide.

Merriam-Webster.comには “telling a story about a hero or about exciting events or adventures”, そして “very great or large and usually difficult or impressive” と定義されていました。今回は, 両方の意味を掛けていることがわかります。

The 250-room hotel, Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, occupies floors 30 to 36 of the building. It aims to attract wealthy foreign tourists by offering quality services and a superb view of Tokyo including the 634-meter-high Tokyo Skytree, the tallest self-sustaining tower in the world.
Room rates range from \70,000 to \700,000 per person per night, including tax and service charges.
The hotel operator expects foreign visitors to account for about 50 percent of all guests in the current fiscal year to March 2017.

今回取り上げるのはcomplexです。形容詞では「複雑な」という意味になりますが、今回は名詞で用いられております（/kάmpleks/）。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、名詞では「1総合センター、団地、共同ビル、（工業）コンビナート、複合体（物）」とありました。LDOCEには “a group of buildings, or a large building with many parts, used for a particular purpose” とありました。今回の場合ですと、複合施設という意味になるかと思われます。

"Pokemon Go" players are descending on an atomic bomb memorial park in Hiroshima, and officials of the western Japanese city are displeased.
They have asked game developer Niantic Inc. to remove the Pokestops and other virtual sites that show up in the park for those playing the popular augmented reality game. The city wants them deleted by Aug. 6, the anniversary of the 1945 bombing and the date of an annual ceremony to remember the victims.
Niantic officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The expansive park is meant as a solemn memorial to the victims. It has become a draw for players since the Japan release of the smartphone game last Friday.

“Gloomy,” “eerie,” “vulgar,” “avant-garde” and “conceptual” are adjectives often used to describe butoh, the genre of Japanese modern dance started in 1959 by Tatsumi Hishikata and Kazuo Ohno in which performers usually paint their near-naked bodies white.
In contrast, Ikko Tamura -- a core member of the leading butoh troupe Dairakudakan (Great Camel Ship) founded in 1972 by iconic artist Akaji Maro -- is now working with others from the company on a show that many push butoh' adjectival envelope to include words such as "friendly," "fun" or even "pop."

直訳すると「誕生日のスーツ」となり、意味が通りません。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で調べてみると、「(生まれたときのままの)素肌、裸」とあり、"in one's birthday suit"で「素っ裸で」という意味になります。
「赤ちゃんが生まれてくるとき、何も着ず、裸である」ということから来ています。
LDOCEで確認してみると、"not wearing any clothes - used humorously"とありました。ただの「裸」の状態ではなく、ユーモアを込めた表現であることが分かりました。

ちなみに同英和辞典でlieを引いてみたところ、「うそをいう，欺く，人をだますもの」などと記載されておりました。
これらからfibは「たわいもない」というニュアンスが強いということが分かります。

２６日、鹿児島県の桜島で爆発的噴火がありました。
Smoke rises 5,000 meters as Kyushu volcano erupts again
Mount Sakurajima erupted early on July 26, belching out a massive column of smoke rising 5,000 meters in the air.
The eruption occurred at 12:02 a.m. at the mountain's Showa crater.
This is the first time that the active volcano in southern Kyushu has spewed out a smokestack that high since an eruption on Aug. 18, 2013, according to the Kagoshima Meteorological Office.
It marked the 47th eruption this year, and the observatory is warning residents and travelers in the area that traffic accidents may occur because of the falling ash.
The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to keep Sakurajima on an alert level of “3,” which closes off the entire mountain except for residential areas along the coast. It has been at that level since February.

Marlins star edges closer to 3,000 MLB hits in win over Phils
MIAMI – Ichiro Suzuki’s 2,997th major league hit and his 507th stolen base sparked a four-run, eighth-inning rally as the Miami Marlins pulled away to a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
Making his first start since he went 2-for-5 on Thursday in Philadelphia, Ichiro was robbed of an extra-base hit in the first inning. Playing center field to give All-Star Marcell Ozuna a breather, Ichiro led off with a deep drive to right that was tracked down by Peter Bourjous, who crashed into the wall to make the catch and had to leave the game.
