Windows could also be shattered by violent eruptions, the agency said.

Professor Nishimura and her research team focused upon the fact that mice similarly lose their hair after two years of age. 本日は記事より、"beyond the pale"を拾います。"pale"は、具合が悪い時などに使う「(顔色などが)青白い」などの意味でおなじみですが、この語は、「柵、杭」の意味もあります。したがって、この表現「柵を越えて」などの意味になりますが、どのような意味合いを持つのでしょうか？ 成り立ちを含め、調べてみました。この表現は「(言動が) 許しがたい、度を越した」の意味であり、同義語には"unacceptable"と意味があることがわかります(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版)。 Oxford Dictionaries On-lineでは"outside the bounds of acceptable behavour"と定義されていました。
また、この表現の成り立ちを調べてみると、興味深くも、イングランドの歴史と密接な関係がありました。14世紀頃、イングランドはアイルランドを征服しており、自国領地とその境界を示すべく、フェンスとして杭を打ち込み、その内側を領土としていました(the English Pale)。その柵の内側はイングランドの領地であるため、イングランドの法の支配下にあり、その範囲内で国民と認められますが、その外側、つまり、"beyond the pale"であると、法の外であり、文明化されていない、野蛮な場とみられていました。そこから、17世紀半ば頃に現在使われている意味として用いられるようになりました。以下、参考までに例文です。

今日でアメリカに来てから9日が経ちましたが、オレゴン、ユージーンともこれでお別れです。
昨年留学していたときにお世話になったホストファミリーとハウスメイトと再会し、食事をしてきました。私のハウスメイトは中国人の男の子で、よく一緒に学校に通ったりしていました。
実は、彼の家の事情で、私が帰国するよりも先に彼が中国に突然一時帰国しまい、きちんとお別れを出来なかったことを後悔していたので、今回会えて少し安心しました。
夜は、ホストマザーと私が去ったあとにホームステイしに来た台湾人と日本人の女の子と共にディナーを楽しみました。台湾人の女の子は英会話教師の母親の影響で、16歳の若さでオレゴンにあるコミュニティーカレッジに通っています。日本人の女の子はオレゴン大学で1学期の間英語を学び、今は現地にある高校で日本語を教えるインターンをしているそうです。2人の話やハウスメイトの話を聞き、志の高さを実感し、自分も見習わなければいけないなと思いました。（Akim）

すでにブログ内でも取り上げられておりますが，北朝鮮が7日9時31分ごろに，南方向に向けてミサイルを発射しました。日本は国内へのミサイル落下に備え，沖縄，東京，埼玉，千葉にPAC3を展開しましたが，域内への侵入はなかったため，迎撃措置はとられませんでした。ミサイルの打ち上げに対し，日本，米国，韓国は北朝鮮に対し非難声明を出しております。北朝鮮側の主張は，人工衛星の打ち上げであり，科学的な実験のために行ったというものです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"THAAD"です。LOCKHEED MARTIN(http://www.lockheedmartin.com/us/products/thaad.html)によると"Terminal High Altitude Area Defense"の頭文字をとっていることが分かります。同サイトの見出しには"When enemies attack, governments must be ready to defend their soldiers, citizens and infrastructure. A state TV announcer said that North Korea had successfully placed a satellite in orbit.
