9 workers dead in Russian mine fire
Rescue teams on Sunday found the bodies of nine construction workers who were trapped inside a burning potash mine in Russia’s Ural Mountains, while Russian officials opened a criminal investigation of the accident.
A fire erupted Saturday at the mine operated by fertilizer company Uralkali in the Perm region east of Moscow. Uralkali said two teams of workers were doing maintenance work in the mine and operations had been suspended while they labored.

potash /pάt`æʃ/ を取り上げます。potash mineとあることから、何かの鉱物を表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「灰汁（あく）；（化学）苛性カリ」とありました。
LDOCEには “a type of potassium used especially in farming to make the soil better” と定義されています。土を肥やすために用いられるようです。
苛性カリというものに馴染みがなかったので調べてみると、コトバンクには「水酸化カリウムの俗称」とありました。ウィキペディアでもう少し詳しく見てみると「潮解性があり、水、エタノールによく溶け、水溶液は強いアルカリ性つまり強アルカリを示す。タンパク質に対し強い腐食性があるため、毒物及び劇物取締法で劇物に指定されている」と説明されていました。水に溶けた状態の時は注意しなければならないことがわかりました。（aqua）
