　anodyne / ˈænədὰɪn/を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店））には「（感情を抑えて）〈人〉を刺激しない、平凡な、退屈な、当たり障りのない」や「鎮痛剤、人を和ませる物・事」とありました。LDOCEではexpressed in a way that is unlikely to offend anyoneやa medicine that reduces painやan activity or thing that comforts peopleと定義されています。また両辞書からanodyneは固い単語であるということが分かりました。
　語源はギリシア語で「痛みのない」という意味のandunosだそうです。oduneは「痛み」という意味です。それに接頭辞のan-がついているのでこのような意味になります。(rain)
