preordain

気になったのはpreordainです。接頭辞preが付いているので前もって何かをしたニュアンスの意味合いかと思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと「〈神・運命などが〉…を定めている，予定している」とあり、通例受身で使用されます。LDOCEでは“if something is preordained, it is certain to happen in the future because God or fate has decided it”と定義されていました。

またordainを調べると「聖職者に叙任する」「〈法律・神・運命・王などが〉…を定める」とあり、2語義はpreordainと大して意味の差はないことがわかりました。ordainの語源はラテン語のordo=a row(列), order(序列)からきています。(Kiwi girl)
