Residents of a swanky Upper East Side high-rise have 24-hour gated entry, a heated indoor pool, breathtaking views of the river — and bullets whizzing through their windows.

A mystery gunman is shooting up apartments at One East River Place from clear across the water on Roosevelt Island, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Now its residents are terrified.

“I’m petrified for my life,” exclaimed Ilene Epstein, 55, who lives in a river-facing apartment on the 22nd floor of the 50-story rental building between East 72nd and 73rd streets.

今回気になったのはpetrify /pétrəfὰɪ/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』では「〈動植物など〉を石化する」「〈人〉を〔恐怖などで〕すくませる〔with〕」という他動詞と、「石化する;硬直する;停止する」という自動詞の意味を持つことがわかりました。

Cambridge Dictionaryでは“If dead things petrify, they change to a substance like stone over a long period of time.” “to frighten someone a lot, especially so that they are unable to move or speak”と定義されています。気になる語源ですが、接頭辞のpetro-, petri-がギリシャ語のpetra(=a stone, rock)からきていることが確認できました。
