be glued toを取り上げます。glueといえば「のり、接着剤」という意味ですが、今回は動詞として使われています。なんとなく意味は予想できますが、この使い方を知らなかったので、調べてみました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、be gluedで「≪…に≫くぎ付けになる、くっついて離れない≪to≫」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to look at something with all your attention”と定義されています。ちなみに、『ウィズダム英和辞典』によれば、glue oneself to A「Aに熱中する」やbe glued to the spot 「(驚き・恐怖・興味などのために)動けない、固まる」などという表現もあるようです。glueを使うことで、その場から動けないさまざまな状況を表すことができそうです。(Blue Sky)
