goodwill 復習

日中関係をパンダで深めるようです。

As a goodwill gesture, China started deploying panda diplomacy when it loaned pandas to Ueno Zoo to commemorate the normalization of diplomatic ties with Japan in 1972.
Japan has also used panda power to create a friendly atmosphere with China. Kono touched upon female panda cub Shan Shan, born last year in Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo, when meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in the end of January.

今回はgoodwill / ɡʊdˈwɪl / を紹介します。goodとwillなのでプラスの意味がある単語と推測しました。『ロングマン英英辞典』によると、“kind feelings towards or between people and a willingness to be helpful” と定義されていました。

『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）では、「[…への]好意, 善意；親善, 友好」とありました。また、goodwillの後に続く単語のgestureは「身ぶり」という意味ではなく、「意思表示」の意味になります。なので「前向きな表明」といった訳になります。

ちなみに、willを調べたところ、名詞で「意志, 願望」を表す単語です。(amphibian)
