foist 復習

今回は foist / fˈɔɪst / を紹介します。初見の単語なので調べてみました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “Impose an unwelcome or unnecessary person or things on.” と定義されていました。つまり「…を強いる」といった意味でしょうか。
確認のため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版（大修館）を使ったところ、「…を押し付ける, 無理に強いする」とありました。使い方はfoistの後ろにoff, on, uponが共起します。

続いて語源を調べたところ “Mid 16th century (in the sense ‘palm a false die, so as to produce it at the right moment’): from Dutch dialect vuisten ‘take in the hand’, from vuist (see fist).”とありました。
要するに、オランダ語で「こぶしの中へ入る」の意味に由来しています。
