　宇宙飛行士の金井宣茂さんが宇宙での滞在によって身長が9センチ伸びたと報告していましたが、実際は2センチだったことがわかりました。

Astronaut Norishige Kanai, on a mission to the International Space Station, apologized on Wednesday for saying he had grown 9 centimeters while in space and expressing concern about whether he’d be safe on his return to Earth.

Most astronauts “grow” during protracted space missions because their spines extend in the absence of gravity, but the gains are usually limited to a couple of centimeters maximum and disappear once they are back on the ground.

The 41-year-old Kanai, who went to space last month for a nearly six-month mission, posted on Twitter on Monday that he had “a big announcement.”

“My height’s been measured here in space and somehow, somehow, I’ve grown 9 centimeters! In only three weeks I’ve really shot up, something I haven’t seen since high school,” he tweeted.

　shoot up を取り上げます。撃つという意味をもつshootにupがつくとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1（物価、温度などが）急に上がる；（子供などが）急に育つ（背が伸びる）2（俗）麻薬を打つ」とありました。ここでは急に身長が伸びたことを表しています。

　LDOCEにはいくつか定義がありましたが、身長に関しては “if a child shoots up, he or she grows taller very quickly and suddenly” と説明されており、突然身長がどんどん高くなることを表すようです。

　無重力空間にしばらくいると背骨の間の軟骨が伸びることで、身長も伸びるのだそうです。その影響で通常では1〜2センチ程度身長が伸びることがあるとのことです。（aqua）
